The link works but the documents are elsewhere
A hypothetical contractor receives notice that a Victorian building dispute hearing will be held remotely. Their contract folder remains at the workshop while they plan to join from home. Confirm the attendance arrangements and prepare access to the relevant material before the day. Being able to join the call is only one part of being ready to participate.
Check the case reference, date, time and stated attendance method against any later communication. Justice Connect's VCAT guidance explains that the hearing notice states how the hearing will be conducted. Follow the current notice and ask for clarification through the appropriate channel if it is unclear. Do not assume a previous hearing's link or arrangements will apply again.
Ask the adviser which documents should be available under the current directions. Use the identified versions and keep page references consistent with the material properly provided. Confirm you can open the files from the intended location. Do not assume a document stored in a shared drive is accessible outside the office without checking authorised access.
In the hypothetical example, check the device, sound, connection and power supply using the permitted platform instructions. Arrange a suitable place to participate without workplace interruptions. Keep a lawful backup access plan and the published contact method for technical difficulties. Avoid making a private recording or inviting others to participate without checking the applicable requirements.
If the location, technology or a necessary participant's availability creates a problem, tell the adviser or seek appropriate procedural guidance before the hearing. Do not treat a request for a different attendance method as approval. Keep the response and follow the confirmed arrangements. Technical preparation does not resolve legal questions about representation or witness attendance.
Have a concise list of points and the relevant document references ready so avoidable access problems do not consume the hearing. CRP can help organise the underlying commercial records. The useful preparation joins the notice, attendance setup and evidence access into one practical check while respecting the tribunal's directions.
