The same date can conceal different deadlines
The proposed settlement expires at a stated time, while the people reviewing and signing it are in different locations. Nobody has confirmed which time zone the deadline uses. Ask the lawyer to clarify the wording before planning the response. An internal calendar entry using your computer's local time may not reflect the actual offer or the event required for acceptance.
Identify the date, time, time zone and required action in the actual proposal. Ask whether the relevant event concerns signing, delivery, receipt or another step. This article does not determine when acceptance becomes legally effective. Do not replace the document's language with an assumption that sending an email before your own close of business is sufficient.
Business.gov.au recommends clear contractual obligations and advice about unclear terms. Give the lawyer the complete correspondence and ask for an unambiguous timing instruction through the appropriate channel. If the proposal merely says Friday afternoon, seek clarification rather than selecting the interpretation most convenient for the business. Keep any agreed extension distinct from a request for one.
Imagine an agreed deadline is stated as 14:00 UTC. For an illustrative location using UTC plus eight hours on that date, the corresponding local time is 22:00. The example is arithmetic, not a statement about any city's current clock. Verify the actual zone and offset for the relevant date, including any seasonal change, before circulating a signing timetable.
Confirm availability of the authorised decision-makers and the process for delivering the response. Keep legal review, internal approval and actual transmission as separate tasks. Do not use the full interval for negotiation and discover that the required signatory is unavailable when the agreed deadline approaches. Ask the lawyer what evidence of delivery or receipt should be retained.
Provide the same confirmed deadline and required event to everyone responsible for the response. Preserve the final communication and relevant timestamps without treating a computer display alone as a legal conclusion. A useful timetable makes the agreed clock visible, so a cross-location settlement does not fail because different people acted on different interpretations of the same short sentence.
