The reported creditor return depends on an uncertain recovery action

Assess report recovery estimate dependency rather than selecting highest dividend range for decision/cash forecast.

The attractive figure depends on another event

A hypothetical creditor reads an administrator's report showing a possible return if an asset recovery succeeds. They use the upper estimate as expected cash in their own forecast. Before relying on it, identify the conditions behind the figure. A report's scenario can help compare options without establishing that the money will be recovered or distributed on a particular date.

Read the explanation around the table

Locate the assumptions, estimated costs and uncertainties associated with the return. Check whether figures relate to different options or different outcomes within one option. Do not compare two percentages while ignoring their timing or conditions. Keep the full report available so a short summary does not remove qualifications that matter to the decision.

Use the report for the intended comparison

ASIC explains that a voluntary administrator's report should analyse proposals and compare possible outcomes with liquidation. It recommends reading the report before the decision meeting and raising insufficient information with the administrator. Ask focused questions about the relevant uncertainty. The guidance does not promise a particular dividend or establish that the most optimistic scenario is the expected result.

Frame a specific question

In the hypothetical example, ask what assumptions about the recovery action drive the estimate and which costs remain uncertain. Do not demand a guarantee that the practitioner cannot provide. Seek clarification of how the scenario would change if the recovery were smaller or delayed. Keep the answer with the decision records rather than replacing the report with an informal recollection.

Separate voting analysis from your cash plan

An option may be worth considering even though the receipt remains uncertain. Ask the accountant how to present that uncertainty in the business's own forecast. Avoid promising your suppliers payment from a distribution that has not been confirmed. A potential recovery should not silently become available cash because a meeting decision is approaching.

Update when new evidence arrives

Retain later reports and compare changed assumptions with the earlier estimate. CRP can help organise the commercial effect on your business. The useful outcome is an informed decision about the proposal and a realistic understanding of the uncertainty, rather than selecting the largest number in the table.
