Leaving the site does not explain the bill

The business is closing a depot, and a final electricity or water bill arrives with charges extending beyond the physical move. Do not simply delete the later portion or pay without checking. Establish the account arrangement, dates and available consumption evidence. The final bill may require an explanation that the company's ordinary monthly forecast does not provide.

Identify the correct account

Match the provider, service address, meter reference and contracting entity to the premises being left. Check whether the service covers only your area or a shared site. Keep the lease and handover correspondence available. A bill addressed to a familiar company name may still concern another location or a period that needs separate reconciliation.

Read the ending arrangements

Business.gov.au recommends understanding contract responsibilities and payment terms. Ask the provider and appropriate adviser what account closure, notice and final-reading process applies. This article does not decide liability for usage or prescribe utility termination rules. Returning keys to a landlord and ending a provider account may involve different actions that need to be confirmed from the actual arrangements.

Preserve the physical evidence

Imagine the business leaves on Friday and another occupier begins using the premises the following week. Keep any authorised meter photograph, handover record and provider correspondence with their real dates. Do not estimate the earlier reading by subtracting assumed daily usage from a later photograph. Explain gaps rather than presenting a reconstructed number as an observed reading.

Break down the disputed amount

Identify usage, fixed charges, estimated readings and other line items separately. Ask for the calculation or correction where the supporting information differs. A later billing date alone does not show later consumption, and an unchanged fixed charge may need a different question. Keep any requested credit unresolved until the provider confirms its treatment or the adviser explains the next step.

Complete the closing record

Retain the confirmed account status, final reconciliation and evidence of payment or a continuing dispute. Update the closure cash plan using supported amounts. Do not assume the landlord or next occupier has completed your provider arrangements. A precise final account helps separate the cost of operating the old premises from an avoidable uncertainty that follows the business after it leaves.
