More time needs a purpose

The lender is pressing for repayment of business debt secured against your home. Asking for time may be part of the response, but explain what can realistically happen during that period. Obtain urgent legal advice about any notice or enforcement step while preparing the request. Negotiations should not be assumed to change an existing deadline.

Identify the event you rely on

Imagine a director expecting a large customer receipt that could reduce the arrears. Distinguish an approved payment schedule from a hopeful collection date. Give the adviser the correspondence, current invoice position and any conditions still outstanding. The lender needs to understand what supports the proposal, including uncertainty that may affect the timing or amount.

Show the payment capacity

business.gov.au explains that a cash flow forecast estimates future income and costs. Prepare current figures showing the proposed payments alongside operating commitments. Keep business receipts separate from personal income and household costs. Money cannot support both a company payment and a household contribution if the forecast has counted the same funds twice.

Make the request specific

Discuss with your adviser the period sought, proposed payments, supporting documents and review dates. Identify which obligations the proposal is intended to address. A request concerning one loan should not silently assume that all related facilities will receive the same treatment. Ask the lender to confirm the scope of any arrangement in writing.

05 / 06

Explain the fallback honestly

Set out what you would do if the expected event does not occur, based on options that have actually been investigated. Do not describe an unapproved refinance as guaranteed funding. In the director's example, a smaller receipt may require a different proposal. Knowing that before the discussion is more useful than revising a promise after it fails.

Keep advice and communication connected

Give your lawyer the lender's response promptly, including conditions you do not understand. Update the figures when circumstances change and keep any joint owner properly involved. The goal is a request that can be assessed on evidence, while the legal position and personal consequences receive the separate attention they require.
