One monthly figure hides several components

A debt agreement proposal gives you a manageable monthly amount, but you still need to understand where the money goes. Ask for the full written payment and fee schedule before deciding. Compare it with other available options using independent advice. An affordable-looking instalment does not by itself explain the total cost or what creditors will receive.

Read the full payment schedule

Imagine a person comparing two proposals with the same advertised monthly payment but different upfront charges and durations. List every required payment and when it is due. Identify amounts payable before the proposal is accepted. Do not assume that a free initial conversation means preparing, lodging or administering the proposed agreement will also be free.

Use the regulator's fee guidance

AFSA explains that debt agreement administrators' fees vary and that setup and ongoing fees must be included in the proposal. Ask what each charge covers and how it is collected. The guidance does not tell you that a particular quote is good value or suitable for your circumstances. Those questions need consideration alongside eligibility, consequences and alternatives.

Separate your payments from creditor distributions

Ask how much of the proposed total goes to fees and how much is expected to reach creditors. Have any percentage explained against its calculation base. In the comparison example, two identical monthly figures may produce different total contributions and distributions. Request a clear reconciliation rather than accepting a headline claim about the percentage of debt being reduced.

05 / 06

Ask about an unsuccessful proposal

Clarify which fees remain payable or refundable if the proposal does not proceed, and what happens if circumstances later change. Obtain advice before stopping existing payments or signing documents on the assumption approval is certain. Keep the actual written terms and answers. A proposed arrangement and an accepted arrangement should not be described as the same completed outcome.

Choose after independent comparison

Take the fee schedules and a complete picture of your income, debts and assets to a financial counsellor or appropriately qualified adviser. Discuss the consequences of bankruptcy and other options as well as the proposed agreement. The decision should reflect the whole position. Knowing where each dollar goes helps you assess the offer rather than simply responding to the smallest advertised instalment.
