A payroll total does not answer the requirement

The accountant's balance sheet shows a substantial employee entitlement provision and you are considering small business restructuring. Give the restructuring practitioner the detailed records rather than assuming the whole provision must immediately be paid, or that none of it matters. The relevant assessment requires the nature and status of the amounts, not just the total under one accounting heading.

Break down the payroll information

Imagine a company with unpaid wages, recorded leave balances and other employee-related amounts. Prepare a schedule identifying each category, the relevant periods and supporting payroll records. Ask the payroll adviser to explain inconsistencies. Do not decide whether an amount is due solely because it appears in a provision account or has not yet been requested by an employee.

Distinguish appointment from proposing a plan

ASIC explains that before a restructuring plan can be proposed, employee entitlements due and payable must have been paid or the requirement substantially complied with. Its guidance excludes entitlements not currently due to be paid. Ask the practitioner to apply those requirements to the records and explain timing. Do not confuse this assessment with a blanket statement about every balance at entry.

Check changes before the proposal

Employee circumstances may change while the company prepares its records. Tell the practitioner about departures, corrections or payments that affect the schedule. In the example, an updated payroll calculation should be supported and dated rather than silently replacing the earlier total. Ask the appropriate adviser which obligations have become due and what evidence confirms any payment.

Avoid unsupported shortcuts

Do not remove employee balances, obtain informal waivers or change classifications merely to make the proposed process appear easier. Seek proper advice about any disagreement and preserve the original records. The company's cash pressure does not justify giving the practitioner an incomplete account. Questions about employee rights and the restructuring requirement need assessment from the actual circumstances.

Use a reconciled readiness schedule

Show verified amounts, payment evidence and unresolved questions with named follow-up responsibility. Ask the practitioner what remains necessary before a plan can be proposed and what alternatives should be considered if the requirements cannot be met. A detailed entitlement review helps the business understand the practical task without turning a balance-sheet provision into an inaccurate eligibility conclusion.
